Tackers program for kids

We’re back with Tackers for Spring, 2020.

With the easing of Covid -19 health regulations in Victoria and the resumption of “contact sport” for under – 18’s from June 21, 2020, we’re hoping that Tackers will return as normal for September 2020 School holiday programs and our Sunday morning Tackers session from 11 th October 2020.

Bookings are now open for these Tackers courses. See our booking forms below.

Covid-19 and sailing. Our Tackers courses (alongside all of our sailing courses) will comply with the Victorian Government Health Regulations, as well Covid – 19 guidelines for Australian Sailing “Discover Sailing Centres”, like the Royal Melbourne Sail Training Academy. We will advise any specific protocols or requirements to your family via the Joining Instructions sent prior to each of our courses.

Why Sailing ? If you’re looking for an outdoor adventure sport for your children that encourages teamwork, active thinking, resilience and water safety then sailing is a great choice for your family. If you’re tired of your kids picking up a screen for inspiration, then Tackers (and sailing) is the ultimate “screen free” zone. Making new friends, learning new knots,  finding our how sailing boats work, discovering the marine environment and more are all part of our Tackers adventures.

If you have any questions about Tackers courses or getting into sailing, please contact Leigh or 9534 0059 or 0412 196301 email: training@rmys.com.au . I started sailing at 9 years old, only because someone gave me a chance to have a go. Now I’m hooked.

Tackers is an introductory, fun, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7 to 12. Kids don’t need to have any prior sailing experience. The only requirement is that they must be ready to have fun!! All boating and safety equipment is provided.

Kids receive a Tackers certificate of achievement at the completion of every program. The Tackers program is delivered in small groups by Australian Sailing qualified Sailing Instructors and Assistant Instructors who love teaching sailing to kids.

Why RMYS, St.Kilda? Come and experience sailing on the Bay at wonderful St.Kilda, next to the St.Kilda Pier. We launch our dinghies from the sandy beach opposite Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron and sail in the sheltered waters of St.Kilda harbour. Mum or Dad can get a coffee at the kiosk or look on from the Pier. When conditions are right we venture further on Port Phillip in bay winds and waves. You may even see a Little Penguin ( a local resident in St.Kilda), a Rakali (a native water rat like an otter) or dolphins.

In Tackers 1 – Having Fun, kids sail in pairs in small boats called Optimists. It’s a great way to make new friends, play games and be active out on the water while learning basic boat handling in a safe environment.

The next level is Tackers 2 – Tricks & Techniques. If kids are confident, they can sail a boat on their own with lots of support and encouragement from instructors, while developing important boat handling skills and an understanding of marine rules and safety.

The final level of the Tackers program is Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast! In individual boats kids learn how to make the boat go faster and begin to think about sailing tactics and racing, while under the guidance and support of instructors.

Cost: $330 per child per level, with a family discount available. Tackers packs are no longer issued, however your child will be sent a Tackers achievement certificate on completion of each level.
