The Squadron saw a beautiful flat sea on Wednesday afternoon as boats headed out of the marina and to the start line.

In our Performance HC division, Sunshine placed first. We congratulate skipper Jim Oosterweghal and crew; Kim Barnard, Simon Mackey, Tatum Mackey, Dylan Oosterweghal and Ashley Shoup.

Jim was proud of his crew, who worked together as smoothly as silk! The effort was all in to win AMS, which didn’t happen. Jim is always looking to improve with his crew and was still very pleased with the all-in effort that brought them first place in PurHC.

Division 2 winners, Rynaby skippered by David Best with the crew: Jurgen Pfeiffer, Doug Williams and Colin Vaughan. Though starting a minute late, Rynaby brought home the winning wine glasses in this incredible effort.

With no electronic navigation, the team managed to cruise around the markers with dead-reckoning and an in-house chart. They followed the boats and brought their collective expertise to the table.

With a “pretty bad start” and the furling system jamming on the downwind from the B to C mark, they had lost 2-3 minutes. However, fortunes favour the brave, Colin said.

The wind seemed to favour them as well. With no navigation and only their brains and brawns, the Rynaby crew hit the penultimate mark at E and found themselves in front of the racing fleet. The finish line was 200 metres away, and still, six boats were within 60 metres of them. The wind kept up, and they sailed past the finish line to claim victory.
