Commodore's Report - August 2019

As is often the case, the August GC meeting coincided with Hamilton Island Race Week and a number of committee members were apologies due to this, resulting in some non-urgent issues being held over.

Update - RMYS member Otis Myles-Malone
|
Last Saturday, RMYS member Otis Myles-Malone was injured during the dismasting of the RYCV yacht White Spirit during the ORCV Melbourne-Geelong race. Otis recently joined the Squadron and has been sailing on Sea Eagle, where he has already made himself a valued crew member.

RMYS Opening Day - Smoking Ceremony 1145hrs
|
Traditionally we start the Opening Day lunch formalities with an Acknowledgement of Country, paying respect to the Traditional Owners and the ongoing custodians of the land on which our clubhouse stands. We will do so again this year, but I have long felt the Squadron should extend that respect to asking the Boon Wurrung, the traditional people and custodians of this coastline, to conduct a smoking ceremony at the Squadron through one of their Elders.

The Summer season will open on Saturday 5th October.

After the smoking ceremony those who have booked lunch will proceed to the harbour room for a 2 course lunch, followed by the presentation to the 2019 Club Member of the Year. Then unfurling of the burgee will commence to officially declare the season open and for members to welcome year 144!
Afterwards the traditional sail past will commence on water followed by live music and drinks in the Olympic Bar throughout the evening.

The Coastal Navigation course is essential for any crew person participating in coastal or offshore yachting. It is considered mandatory for anyone who wishes to become a skipper and extend their boating adventures beyond protected waters. This course runs for 6 consecutive weeks.

Start Powerboating

September Holiday Course 25th-27th

This is the ideal course for first time powerboaters or young people 12-18 years old, who want to build their confidence before getting out on the water. The emphasis is on developing "safe power boating" skills with qualified instructors in a safe and supportive environment.

Powerboat Handling Course
