History of the Napier Cup
Donated June 8, 1929, by the first Naval member, Rear Admiral W.R. Napier R.N., to be raced for in keelboats by skippers under the age of 21 years. As it was considered at the time that the Juniors of the club were not experienced enough to handle a racing yacht, it was not until 1933 that the trophy was first contested when a small replica was presented to the winner, Stan Taggart, who won with “Petrel”. It then lay in abeyance until season 1936-37, since when it has been contested regularly ever since.
