Commodore's Report March 2020

Charles-Meredith-2018-2019
After our special GC meeting focused on COVID-19 issues a week ago (outcomes summarized in the special eBreeze last Tuesday), GC met last Thursday via video conference on its normal monthly cycle. In preparing this summary of that meeting, it was striking how much has changed in a month. My February meeting report contained no mention of the coronavirus. Since …

Mara Stransky going to Olmpics

Copy of Copy of Last weeks racing
In amongst all the bad news about sports closures, the Olympics deferred and no footy … I thought I’d mention some good news with a link to RMYS.
One of Australia’s top young sailors, 20-year old Mara Stransky, has been selected to represent Australia in the Laser Radial class at the Tokyo Olympics. Mara is the daughter of Andrew and Caroline Stransky and they all live aboard the family’s 50 foot catamaran, Fantasia, her Laser strapped to the deck as they move between regattas from their base in Moreton Bay, Queensland! She has some interesting links to RMYS.
The second-last time the World Cup Sailing was held at RMYS, some of you may remember a big yellow catamaran anchored in St Kilda Safe Harbour. That was Fantasia, with Mara and family having the best on-site accommodation of any competitors! As a fellow multihull sailor, I got to know them. At the next World Cup (the last at RMYS), Mara and her mum asked if they could stay on my boat Peccadillo, as it’s a long way to sail your home for a two-week competition! I readily agreed and organised club access for them through the office. Then for the next Laser comp in Melbourne, the now young adult Mara again stayed aboard Peccadillo. These regattas were markers of Mara’s move from state-level sailing to world-level sailing. I like to think that her association with RMYS – perhaps rather tenuous! – contributed to this. Compared to some competitors at her level, Mara’s campaign is funded on a shoestring and every little bit helps.
I emailed her on behalf of the Squadron the other day to congratulate her on Olympic selection. It took her a while to reply as she was on Fantasia en route to Brisbane after the recent Laser worlds at Royal Brighton. As always, she was as bright as a button, over the moon at being selected and pointing out that, at her young age, the delay to the Olympics was most likely a plus, not a problem, for her. And she remembers RMYS fondly …
