Toast to Kindred Clubs at Presentation Night
A traditional item on the Presentation Night programme is the Commodore’s toast to guests and kindred clubs. The toast by the Commodore is responded to by a visiting commodore, who on behalf of the guests and kindred clubs proposes a toast to RMYS.
This practice originated when many members from other clubs attended presentation nights (originally men only “smoke nights”), to be presented with trophies they had won by participating in other club’s races during the season.
The protocol requires only RMYS members to stand and join the RMYS Commodore in the toast to guests and kindred clubs. When the visiting commodore toasts RMYS, RMYS members should stay seated and all visitors join the visiting commodore in a toast to RMYS.
These days very few members from other clubs attend to receive trophies however the principle still applies.

RMYS Working Bee
Thanks to all the Members (and a few proxies!) that came down to the Squadron on Sunday to help out with the Working Bee.
I’m sure the recipients of the trophies will be pleased with the results, as I am with all the help to tidy the yard, replace tap washers, trim the hedges, etc. etc.
We recognise that it Is not always possible for Members to attend on Sundays (for example it clashed with Classics racing last Sunday), so I will create a list of suitable tasks that need doing and will put it on the RMYS Website. This way Members can meet Working Bee obligations at a time that suits them. Members can take a look at the list, and if there are any tasks they would like to undertake, please contact me. All equipment will be provided, as well as any training/briefing.
Painting (eg the race tower doors and ironwork)
3 Strand Mooring Line splicing (instruction provided – it’s easy!)
Marina tap washer replacement
Marina Gates (glass) cleaning
I should have a list up shortly, and will notify Members when in place.
Oh, and sorry about the lack of a BBQ after the Working Bee, I won’t forget next time!
