Welcome new boat ‘ TANGAROA’ to RMYS

created by dji camera

Tangaroa was built in Bayonne France in 1976 by Langonnais yard. A custom modification of a design called a Galapagos 43 by Gilbert Cardoff-Duflos, she is a 46 foot square chime steel ketch with a fin keel and a flush deck. After spending her early life in the Mediterranean she ended up having a major refit in Tahiti around 2010 then heading to Patagonia for a few years.

I bought Tangaroa in Tasmania in 2018. Most recently she has sailed up the east coast as far as Coffs Harbour, out to Lord Howe island then back down to Tasmania before crossing again through the Furneaux group and over to port Phillip bay so her skipper could return to work for a bit. Prior to setting off into Bass Straight in the middle of winter her skipper had just a couple of weeks distant experience on bare boat charters in protected waters. To date with no thanks to skill, knowledge or sound judgement and rather the grace of Neptune she has remained afloat and kept her skipper and crew warm dry and happy.
