It was a tricky afternoon for racing as the winds were light and variable, indicated by patches of ‘silver’ on the Bay, especially to the south. Race Officials John Taylor, Greg Blackwood and Andrew Gluth had their work cut out for them to choose courses suitable for spinnaker and non-spinnaker boats. After discussing several options, they came up with a course that led our sailors straight south with the spinnakers having a longer run towards Port Melbourne and back.

As it happened, the finish of both divisions was affected by the wind, with some boats crawling over the finish line and others lucky to catch what breeze there was. Whether it was the luck of being in the right place at the right time or brilliant tactics, the crews of ‘Red Dog’ and ‘Akala’ came home with the goods. A good-spirited Don McDonell and his crew of Red Dog confirmed that it was tricky to catch the wind but they were happy enough with the outcome.

‘Charlotte’ crew members Ross Flood and Bernadette Hosking, on the other hand, were sailing strong initially. However, suffered a slow slug across the finish line even with other crew members holding out the head sail to increase their speed. Overall, a good finish and good sailing, seeing we’ve had to abandon the last couple of races!
