Lady Stonehaven Day 1 Report

The Lady Stonehaven was hosted off Elwood beach where the RMYS Junior Racing team got a chance to test their knowledge and racing skills after months of lockdowns against the RBYC team. Veteran Lady Stonehaven and Stonehaven Cup race officer Andrew Gluth conducted three races with the help of RMYS junior parents on both the committee and mark laying boats. A light and shifting breeze in the first two races tested the concentration and skills of the crew while a more consistent breeze in the third produced a ‘down to the wire’ racing spectacle. RMYS was represented by four crews against RBYC’s five.

The four RMYS crews include: (Skipper, mainhand, foredeck)

Matthew Norton 1023:
Ryan Savage, Jock Hogg, Nick Maria

Scarlet 1030:
Oli Skerritt, Ethan Rassias, Eliza Davidson

Heather 1035:
Alex Ward, Ari Rassias, Carli Preston

Kestrel 1036:
Lachy Skerritt, Swanee Myles-Malone, Myra Eve Barber

The first race saw quite a slow start off the line from all boats with the fragile breeze, but the RMYS juniors applied their knowledge from light breeze training sessions, along with the close reading of the sailing instructions to avoid a disqualification that saw other boats fall victim to, resulting in commanding placings for RMYS. The second race saw the RBYC boats gain a slight edge off the start but were chased down by the RMYS crews on the first upwind leg. Slightly better breeze allowed for our foredecks to show off their kite flying skills, wind shifts once again tested the crews resulting in some good placing with slight improvements to be made in the third race. The third and final race for the day produced some close racing with the increase in wind, with the boats battling it out to end the day high up in regatta standings. Excellent starts and teamwork onboard the RMYS boats saw once again great results. The results for the three races are as follows:

The Results

4th, 9th, 6th

Scarlet 1030:
