John Herbert (Bert) Ferris Memorial Service

A Memorial Service for Bert will be held at 2pm Thursday 21 November in the Harbour Room at Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron.

It is with much sadness I advise that Bert Ferris passed away last night, he was 93. He was a weekly visitor to RMYS until his stroke in February 2018 which took away his mobility and communication however his mind was still as sharp as a tack.

Bert joined Royal St Kilda Yacht Club in January 1944 as a cadet member, he was well known in his sailing days as a keen and competitive forward hand in the Tumlare class yachts. Bert sailed in the 1946 Sydney to Hobart on the RGYC yacht Merlan. In 2010 he was given honorary life membership for his enormous service to the club, particularly as historian. He had a deep knowledge of club protocols and a keen desire they be retained.

Bert’s wonderful legacy to RMYS is the magnificent book RMYS 140 years.

Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron was Bert’s family, his love and his life. The rooftop ensign is at half mast, I will advise funeral details when available.
