AWKR presents the premier of Maiden, the incredible documentary of the true story of Tracy Edwards, who in the face of adversity became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989.
An inspirational and empowering true story of the women who dared to make waves and follow along on the journey with the 24 year old skipper over the course of 167 days and 33,000 nautical miles.
“Enthralling viewing even for audiences with little to no knowledge of or interest in sailing. Maiden pays powerful tribute to a true pioneer…
Finally, after three weeks, we got some racing in this week.
Wednesday was the MidWeek Mariners Pursuit race with the competitors setting off on a Full Red course, in sunshine and 8-10 knots of breeze. The finish was very close in the spinnaker pursuit division.
Another Squadron fun party at Docklands on Saturday 10th August.
Those of us racing should manage to be alongside by 17:30, those of us cruising can have a leisurely ride up the river.
Dinner will start at 18:00 from boat to boat.
Let Pat know if you’re a starter, and how many you’re planning to have on board.”
Guided history & club tours were run throughout the course of weekend for Open House Melbourne.
Special thanks to Julie Cutler for initial liaison with Open House and Pauline Callanan, Marg Ludowyk, Lea Ram, Dierdre Wilson; George Wilson, Nick Stone, Ralph May, David Hodge, Roger Hatten, Leo Hogan, Mark Davies, & Anthony Callanan for organisation of displays and conducting guided tours.
Due to warnings of squalls of 45kts on Wednesday and a gale warning for Saturday and Sunday, there was no racing this week. It’s being a very strange winter that we get no racing in from week to week.
Fingers crossed for favourable conditions for this week’s events –
