From Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 March, RMYS hosted the William Angliss Institute Resort Management Victorian School Team Racing Championship for the third year running. 26 teams representing 18 schools competed, with almost 200 students involved along with their teachers, coaches, and parents. This event is the largest on the school sailing calendar, and is a culmination of all the hard racing done through Term 4 2014 and Term 1 2015.
Racing was scheduled for 9am to 4pm each day, with Division 2 racing on Thursday, Division 1 on Friday, and both divisions coming together for the finals carnival on Saturday.
Friday saw much better weather, with 74 races being completed on the short 'S'-shaped course in a beautiful southerly breeze, and there was almost continuous racing all day.
Saturday was a very early start for Division 2, to try to make up for Thursday's blowout. Teams were on the water just after sunrise at 7:30am. Division 1 joined the racecourse at about 11am. This was another great day of racing, with only a couple of delays due to the breeze shifting from east to south. 75 races were completed, including knockout finals for Division 2.
The winners of each of the trophies were:
John Middleton Trophy for State Championship: St Michael's Grammar
Helen Middleton Trophy for winner of Division 2: St Leonard's College
1st Girls' Schools Victoria: Toorak College
1st Associated Grammar Schools: The Peninsula School
1st Associated Public Schools: Haileybury
1st School Sports Victoria: McKinnon Secondary College
Most Improved: Dromana College
Best Regional Team: Cornish College/Victory Lutheran College
The team from Albert Park College, who are sponsored by RMYS, put in an excellent effort in what is only their second attempt at this competition. They placed a very creditable 8th out of 14 in Division 2, and demonstrated significant improvement through all their training in the past year.
A huge thanks to all the volunteers who took time off work, got up extremely early, and worked hard all day to make this event a resounding success. Congratulations to all competitors for their skilful sailing and great attitude.
