Following a group submission to the SC, changes to twilight sailing will be introduced to address a potential safety issue and to alleviate concerns around the start time for the twilight spinnaker fleet.
Race time limit
Twilight race time limit will be changed from sunset to 10 minutes before sunset. Please check the start sheet for the time limit from week to week.
SC also reminds competitors “Vessels under way must show the proper lights from sunset to sunrise and in restricted visibility” (refer Victorian Recreational Boating Safety Handbook – 2015, p 110).
Spinnaker fleet start
For the post-Christmas twilight series, SC has supported the introduction of a pursuit start for spinnakers.
This means the spinnaker and the non-spinnaker pursuit fleets will start and sail concurrently.
The first spinnaker boat will start at with the first non-spinnaker pursuit boat, the remaining spinnaker competitors will be assigned a start time relative to the first spinnaker starter.
A combined start sheet will enable all to identify the start time for each competitor. Separate results will be produced for spinnaker and non-spinnaker events. PHS results for each group will be decided by position across the line relative to other competitors while AMS/IRC results will be based on elapsed time.
This also means the Spinnaker competitors will be eligible for the best start award.
