From the two Invitation Races it was clear that the cup would be hard fought for with tough competition presented by all three participating clubs. This was followed by a morale boosting performance by Mollie G of two first places in the first two official heats. Our other two crews enjoyed the larger fleet experience while Alex got the opportunity to sail in Brighton boat C184 Kittiwake IV.
Outside of the on-water competition there were a number of social events, ensuring the traditional Stonehaven comradery and sportsmanship. With four of seven races out of the way we enjoyed a much welcomed rest day, giving those who weren’t consigned to fixing the boats a chance to recharge.
By the last race Mollie G sat one point behind C183 John Akhurst (RBYC Clare Carew, Darcey Holmes, Rosie Murray), runners up of the previous Stonehaven Cup. In a spectacular final downwind run, during which John Akhurst and Mollie G sat in 2nd and 3rd respectively, a 180 degree wind shift gave Mollie G the edge to pass John Akhurst and secure the regatta victory on countback.
All participants can agree that the week was a great success. Cadet sailing is open to anyone from 12 to 19 years of age, with the Stonehaven Cup held during January each year in either Victoria or King Island. For enquiries contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
