There's no better way to escape a Melbourne winter than to enter the Phuket Raceweek Regatta held at the Cape Panwa Hotel in Thailand.
Nine sailors from RMYS competed in the Bareboat Charter division held between 15 and 19 July on Venture, a Hanse 40.
Raced over four days and up to 5 races, usually the Bareboat division are sent around the islands in the Andaman Sea.
It all came down to the last day, after finishing first over the line by nine minutes in the first race, the RO had planned to run the second and final race once all boats had finished. We didn’t want another race, being fairly certain we were in top spot.
It was a tense and "what-if calculations" time on board Venture while waiting for the final boats to round the island and come into sight. After waiting for what seemed an eternity and with no sign of our competitors on the horizon the RO finally announced "there will no more racing for the day and we'll be sending you all home". We had won!!!! After lots of crew back-slapping and moments of affection (sshh, what happens on the boat stays on the boat) we headed back to Cape Panwa to celebrate.
Word has got around RMYS about this popular regatta. Maybe next year we'll charter two boats.
