There hasn't been any keelboat racing at RMYS over the Christmas/New Year period, but many of our members have been involved in ocean races, regattas, and championships over the past couple of weeks. Here is a round-up of all the events:
Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race - 26 December
This year only one RMYS yacht competed in the biggest ocean race of the southern hemisphere; John Newbold's Primitive Cool. It was a tough year for all the competitors, with strong winds on the nose for the first night and then light conditions across Bass Strait and onward.
Go to the Primitive Cool Facebook page and 'Like' it for more updates and photos.
ORCV Cock of the Bay - 26 December
Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron again hosted the Boxing Day Dash (Cock of the Bay).
Affascinante, Akuna Maid, Antagonist, Gienah, How Bizarre, Koa-Atea, Mrs Overnewton, Peccadillo, SeaYa, and Sunshine all entered the race.
Peccadillo took out overall Line Honours and won the Multihull division.
How Bizarre finished second on PHS, third on Line Honours, third on IRC, and fourth on AMS in Division 2.
SeaYa came ninth on Line Honours, ninth on PHS, and 12th on AMS in Division 2.
Mrs O finished eighth on IRC, ninth on AMS, 12th on Line Honours, and 13th on PHS in Division 2.
Sunshine won Division 4 AMS, came fourth on PHS, and was sixth on Line Honours.
Congratulations to all who competed.
Unfortunately, a number of our yachts retired and so did not get a place.
ORCV Melbourne to Devonport - 27 December
Charles and the Peccadillo team backed up their performance at Blairgowrie by winning Line Honours and the Multihull division of the Melbourne to Devonport. Peccadillo was also second on Line Honours for the Top of the Island race on 30 December. Congratulations!
Launceston to Hobart - 27 December
Remedy, crewed by RMYS members Russell Hibbert, Andy Hibbert, Andy Doolan, and Ian Lindsay, placed a very creditable 12th on PHS and 10th on AMS in the Launceston to Hobart Race Series (which includes Hobart's King of the Derwent race). They did especially well in Race 1, scoring a very low 2 points. Congratulations to this team on a sterling effort! Full results can be found here.
BYS Petersville Regatta - 27-30 December
After the Boxing Day Dash, BYS hosted a revitalised Petersville Regatta after a long hiatus. RMYS yachts Matrix and Avocet competed in this regatta.
Matrix finished 19th on PHS in Division 1.
Avocet finished third on PHS (after winning the first two races!) in Division 2.
Optimist Australian Championship - 2-9 January
We have three members competing at the Opti Nationals this week at Georges River Sailing Club, NSW. There is the usual huge fleet of Opti sailors, with 253 boats on the water. After two qualifying races, Linus Talacko is sitting in 35th, Hugo Macmillan in 77th, and Matthew Walker in 114th, all in the Open fleet.
J24 Australian Championship - 3-8 January
Sandringham YC is hosting the J24s for their Nationals this week and three races have been sailed so far. There are 19 boats competing, with a number of RMYS members sailing in the event. Current series results can be found here.
If you know of any other members competing in sailing events, please let us know! Stories and photos are always much appreciated. Email Lou - firstname.lastname@example.org or reply to any eBreeze newsletter.
