Wednesday 22 April
Race 4 of the Uni-Pro Midweek Mariners Series was held in a south to southeasterly breeze of 15-18 knots. 23 boats competed, with Terry Swalwell's Hotshot taking out the main race and also the Half-Tonne Challenge. Vagrant had the best start with a perfect score (0 seconds).
The Mountain Goat of the Day this week was decided by peer nomination, as the Race Officers are not in the best position to see silly things done around the course! The prize went to Mistress for running aground near St Kilda Marina.
The annual Anzac Day Pursuit race was conducted in tricky conditions of 4-12 knots of west to southwesterly wind, with a big change after the start. Eleven competitors braved the showery weather, with Myaura winning the pursuit race and also the Best Start on 3 seconds. Ellipse took away the AMS prize and got their name on the HC (Mick) Brooke Memorial Shield.
Sunday 26 April
The inaugural Parents vs Kids Challenge ran last Sunday. This regatta was conducted in S80s, with the parents in one boat and the kids in the other. The participating teams were:
Keith Chatto Katie Chatto
Russell Hibbert Andy Hibbert
Murray McCutcheon Daniel McCutcheon
Michael Morse Christopher Morse
Jürgen Pfeiffer Christine Pfeiffer
Robert Walker Matthew Walker
The teams battled it out for bragging rights over whether the parents or kids were the better sailors. The parents claimed the first race, as the kids had some issues with the spinnaker. Roles reversed for the second race with the kids taking out the win ... but the glory was to go to the parents after they won the third. Everyone came home with smiles and laughter after a fun day despite dreary conditions.
Thanks very much to Ian Hughes and Jan Schjottelvig for lending Espresso to the kids and to Steve Barker for lending Rock n Roll to the parents. It would be great to get more families and more boats involved next time, so look out for this event next year if you are part of a parent/child combination of RMYS members.
