17 boats started the Ruth Nangle race on Saturday, heading down to Safety Beach in a cool and blustery south to south-west breeze. The first boats were off at around 8am, with the fastest away just before 10am. Many of the competitors were feeling queasy in the lumpy seas, and were happy to make it to the sheltered waters of Safety Beach in the afternoon. Tigris had an unlucky day, having to retire from the race due to crew sickness and then breaking the steering a few miles from the end point and requiring a tow from William Paterson. The pursuit start resulted in some close finishes after several hours of racing.
Safety Beach Sailing Club hosted another excellent dinner on the Saturday night in their beautiful club rooms, with crews enjoying themselves immensely. It was a great opportunity to catch up with former RMYS member Mark Lawrence, who kindly hosted us along with his partner Dianne Jackson.
13 boats raced back to St Kilda on the Sunday; with Remedy joining the fleet, Salamander III staying at Hidden Harbour for the Adams 10 Waitangi Cup next weekend, and Matador, Envyus, and Astarte making their way home early. Everyone felt much better in the calmer conditions, though the wind did drop out somewhat in the middle of the race. However, the latter boats were lucky enough to come home in a lovely 12-15 knot sea breeze, which no doubt helped their results.
Our sincere thanks go to our generous sponsor Regis; the Safety Beach Sailing Club team who finished the race for us on Saturday and started the fleet on Sunday; to the SBSC catering team and Mark and Dianne for their lovely hospitality; to Dave Croke who provided a taxi service on board William Paterson to and from the sailing club and got Tigris there safely; and to the tireless partners and friends who gave lifts around the area to their teams and others.
Results are available here and prizes will be awarded at tomorrow night's Twilight Race presentation.

RMYS yachts Remedy and Doris Jean competed in the ORCV Latitude Ocean Race on Saturday 21 November. Remedy placed a very creditable 2nd, with Doris Jean in 10th. Doris Jean also started the ORCV Pursuit Race on Sunday, but retired due to the low windspeed. Full results are available from the ORCV website. The photo below is of the Doris Jean crew from the ORCV Facebook page.
