Nine brainy teams contested the 2016 Australia vs New Zealand Rugby edition of Damo's Trivia Night. It was clear that the questions were set just right for the audience, as the scores were extremely close right up to the final round.
Participants were treated to new game called 'Port or Starboard' - which looked awfully like the old game of 'Heads or Tails'. This added a new degree of difficulty for those less coordinated, with the occasional 'ship' pointing head to wind instead of to one side or the other... Some also wondered whether the coin was somehow weighted to starboard given the results of the toss, but we can only assume it's because that side of the coin had right of way!
The doughnut eating competition, which was probably the highlight of the night, consisted of several rounds. The basic rule was that you had to eat your doughnut without touching your face with your hands or using your tongue to assist. Well done to James Whiteley for beating out Bruce Rogers in the final round; we hope you could both sleep after all that sugar!
The team called 'Shane Gatting' (also known as 'Damo's Mates') finished on top of the ladder with an excellent 76 points. However, in a last-minute and controversial decision, the quizmeister realised they had too many team members to qualify for the win. Therefore he reallocated the prizes to the official winners, our Race Officers and friends on the William Paterson team. Equal third place went to the Phantom table and the Staff team, imaginatively named 'Table 4'. The 'wooden spoon' prize went to the BOOTS team, who at least have a lovely new boat to console them.
A big thanks to Damo for the excellent questions, games and MC-ing, and to Todd Pedler for his wonderful support and doughnut purchases! Thanks also to Todd's daughter Charli, who drew an excellent ship on the whiteboard and generally put up with all the grown-ups' mischief.
Photos of the night are on Facebook - please join the RMYS group to check them out. Thanks to Alistair Hart for the pics.
See you all again next year!
