A big thank you to all the previous Chairs of the AWKR who have taken the time to either write or meet with me in recent weeks offering their advice and support. I would also like to thank Rosie Colahan, Linda Goldsmith and Debbie Parker for their ongoing dedication and support for Women And Girls In Sailing. This week both Linda and Debbie Parker, who is the Chair for WAGIS committee for Yachting Victoria, met with state government officials to highlight the ongoing need to promote our sector of sporting and promote women's sailing in Victoria.
Rosie Colahan and I have had several meetings about the importance of access to this sport and the join forces with resources and training. WAGIS and the AWKR are now offering up to 8 training events in the lead-up to the AWKR. It is our goal to broadcast some of these training sessions through a webinar. Anyone with high level video skills who is keen to volunteer to assist us with this initiative, please contact Paul Bunn on 0409 500 340 or email email@example.com.
It is our vision to take the regatta to a higher level of competition with more PR exposure, which in turn will drive a higher calibre of sponsor.
We are currently targeting several corporate sponsors who are seeking to attract more women into their workforce. We believe that this will be a good "win-win" for both sport and for industry.
The AWKR committee this week agreed to move our charity sights into a different sector of the community and we are pleased to announce the unanimous support for "Sailors with disABILITIES". This move has already seen some fabulous co-operative spirit with Sailors with disABILITIES not only offering up their boat as a spectator boat for our regatta, but it has already opened up opportunities for more presence from clubs in NSW.
A big thank you to the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria for their support for our AWKR. The ORCV have agreed to host a link on their web page, driving traffic to our regatta. Interestingly enough, out of 5000 ocean sailors who have competed in events with the ORCV over the past four years, 831 of them were women!
On a closing note, I am seeking a volunteer who can work during business hours and is skilled in administration and typing. We have about 500 women sailors in our database from previous AWKRs. Most of the information is currently in excel spreadsheets, and we have now created an online database for all our women sailors to assist with marketing and newsletters. We would require about 40 hours of volunteer time. If you are available, please contact Lynne on 018 157 222 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Many thanks, and happy sailing.
