It has been a very productive month forming the AWKR committee and assigning tasks. Our project plan has some 25 tabs; all of which are further populated; all equally as important as the next.
We are casting out to join our training with the BLiSS series, and you will notice that the dates are all in the calendar below. There are now five training sessions being offered plus two Women Helm's training course ~ dates to follow on that one.
Did you know that there are eight Women Sailing opportunities BEFORE the AWKR? Check out the calendar below.
Please make sure you sign up for the Port Phillip Women's Championship Series. It is an important prelude to the AWKR. Why? Because the best way to win an owner's confidence to allow you to use their boats in the AWKR is to sail these types of races and series with them. If you look at some of the most successful women on the water, they use boats owned by other people, having built confidence over time.
We are delighted to advise that we have already started working with our long-term and valued sponsors and are also seeking a few new names to the podium to help lift the profile and assist interstate competitors to open up the opportunities that the AWKR have to offer.
We have piloted a few new initiatives including a massive event that has been largely supported by the Committee of the Festival of Sails. Wait until you see it! We have put some thought into this and it should be hilarious and amazing all at the same time. It has certainly been designed to raise the Women & Girls in Sailing profile; championing the AWKR and bring the spotlight on the need for boats to be generously and willingly provided to host our event.
More on that to come. If anyone is available to assist as a volunteer at the Festival of Sails, part of our offerings back to Geelong in return for their generosity and support was to assist with volunteers. Step right up if you are free.
Another initiative is to offer a new trophy to each of the 6 keel-boat clubs on Port Phillip to provide a minimum of four boats to qualify for our new intra-club challenge. More on that to come. We see this as both boosting our numbers and bringing a more collaborative spirit on the water; something that I have understood very early is a hot topic within the clubs.
Please, join the AWKR database. Part of our new generation is to build a complete A-Z list of Women sailors who wish to know of up and coming events that are a prelude to the AWKR. Send you details to: AWKR2017@gmail.com
I would like to thank my current committee for stepping up and already doing amazing things.
