At 4:57 pm BoM updated the weather forecast for Sunday – Storm Force wind warning! Did not need to wait long before Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) officials quickly issued a notice 2017 Association Cup racing abandoned” – without plan for a re-sail. So we are all deferred to 2018. This finished a demanding period of planning the RMYS challenge for The Cup.
For many weeks the Sailing Committee (SC) considered, which RMYS boats, what might the weather have in store, which yachts other clubs would pick in their team?
Planning started assuming NOR/SI’s would be similar to 2016 – SYC had other plans. Ten minutes before our first Skippers meeting the 2017 NOR was released, previous plans would not suit, back to the drawing board!
SYC NOR introduced 4 divisions, needing 8 yachts, handicap ranges for each division, 4 races for each division to be sailed over approximately 5 hours on one day, all results to count, no re-sail as well as other smaller changes. To the credit of the Sailing Committee team advisors and the enthusiasm of Skippers and Owners, RMYS were ready to sail a fleet well ahead of the day. However, all clubs delayed publishing teams hoping to get a better feel for the weather and competition, RMYS followed suit.
Thanks goes to the yachts that were prepared to sail, and particular thanks to the reserve boats that were ready to step into the team at the last minute if called upon.
Primary Team was
Addiction S16 – Richard McGarvie Antagonist – Jim Lynch
Arcadia S17 – PJ Davison Archimedes S35 – Tom Ely
How Bizarre S13 – Scott Robinson Jungle Juice S292 – Janet Dean/David Sudano (Skipper)
Portofino S43 – Stuart Tait Salamander III S191 – Monica Jones
Christine S77 - Paul Bunn Take Five S197 - Jurgen Pfeiffer
Along with the owners and skippers, the character of RMYS members was demonstrated by the number of crew prepared to sail on the day to bolster crew numbers and experience. Too many to name here but thank you.
Another demonstration of support for the RMYS Association Cup challenge came from the specific event sponsors
(PS Thank you to Chris Jones, Monica Jones, Bert Ferris, Harry Leggett, Sally Green and Robert Green for help with the history).
Michael Culhane – Club Captain.
