Apollo Bay Race

Rod Austin, Tuesday, 21 May 2013

Congratulations to Bandit who won on IRC as well as taking seconds in both AMS and PHS, and the three RMYS boats that competed. Unfortunately, Decadence had a mishap when leaving Brighton and could not start.

For the 24 boats that started, the 2013 Apollo Bay race will be remembered for generally light and variable winds, with large shifts making navigation challenging - some might say even a lottery. A sloppy sea and regular rain showers did not make for the most enjoyable sailing conditions at all!

Hush took out the honours in AMS and Upbeat in PHS.

In their first ORCV race, Senna was first across the line as well managing a second on IRC so well done!

RMYS Results

IRC:  7th – Primitive Cool, 12th – Weekend Option

 AMS: 13th – Addiction 14th – Weekend Option

 PHS: 10th – Primitive Cool 13th – Addiction 14th – Weekend Option

 Line Honours: 6th – Primitive Cool, 15th – Addiction, 22nd – Weekend Option

Working Bee and BBQ last Sunday

Rod Austin, Tuesday, 21 May 2013

A big thankyou to the 30 plus members that attended the bi-annual working bee and BBQ.

I really enjoy the working bees at St Kilda as there is a real sense of comraderie and the work is fun when done in groups.

The sunshine came out, plenty of us got swiped with black paint and the trophies are as clean as they have ever been.

AND it's always nice  to sit and have a well-earned BBQ in the yard when the work is done.

The next working bee is in September.

Thank You Marcus Coppens

Mark Coppens
Rod Austin, Wednesday, 15 May 2013

With Marcus Coppens resigning as Rear Commodore, the General Committee on behalf of the Membership of RMYS would like to thank Marcus for his dedication and hard work on the General Committee and as Rear Commodore. Most may not be aware of Marks contribution to the Squadron not only serving on GC, but also being instrumental in the early days of negotiation of the f&d contract and other specific projects over the years.

Jessica Watson - What an Inspiration.

Rod Austin, Wednesday, 15 May 2013

Jessica Watson certainly drew a great crowd with more than 150 people in attendance to hear about her adventures. During her 45 minute talk Jessica explained her training regime in preparation for her round the world sailing trip, when she was just 15 years old. Her choice of yacht was a small, but sturdy S&S 34, which, with help from her dedicated shore crew, she overhauled and customized to her height and abilities after buying it in less than ideal condition. Knowing her yacht inside and out was part of her preparation along with some mental and physical fitness training.

Jessica told us about her most harrowing experience in a ferocious storm while crossing the Atlantic Ocean, where she battled winds exceeding 75 knots and waves taller than 15 meters, not to mention contending 4 knockdowns in a single evening. Despite this and a couple of lonely days wondering why she got herself into this challenge, Jessica never wanted to give up. “Not that you really can give up once you start a journey like that. The fastest way to get home is to keep sailing”.

After  23,000nm and more than 200 days at sea (catching 1 fish, completing multiple sail repairs, battling storms and calm patches and scaling the mast more than once), Jessica Watson, who hated sailing when she was little and was scared of heights, completed her round the world voyage and pulled into Sydney Harbour on May 15th 2010.

Jessica talks about her round the world trip as “just another challenge”. She explains that she was just as excited to get her learner’s permit when she returned home and was just as proud of her Sydney – Hobart achievements, when she competed in 2011 with the youngest team to ever enter the race.

After being asked what advice she would give parents and kids with dreams like hers she said “I wouldn’t dream of giving parents advice. I don’t think I am quite qualified for that.” However, her main message was "You don't have to be someone special or anything special to achieve something amazing, you've just got to have a dream, believe in it and work hard........."

The Australian Women’s Keelboat Committee would like to thank Jessica for giving up her time to speak with members and friends of RMYS. It certainly was a fantastic insight into the life of a girl who had a dream and stopped at nothing to achieve it.

 Upcoming Lectures:

Wednesday 15th May – Secrets of Starting – Johnny Rodgers and the VIS Team

Wednesday 22nd May – Role Delegations for Getting to the Top Mark in Contention – Mark Tonner-Joyce

Wednesday 29th May – Sail Trim – Col Anderson

Dinner will be available in the Olympic Bar from 5pm before each lecture. Bookings are highly recommended via email to olympicbar@rmys.com.au

Marina Penguin Update 14 May 2013

Rod Austin, Tuesday, 14 May 2013

A six o'clock this morning I visited Nikki and her Earthcare team of Volunteers to see what they get up to six days a week. I was surprised by how busy they were.

Before we even entered the breakwater area, two penguins were discovered in the Kiosk enclosure, neither of which had been microchipped (discovered) previously.

Nikki and the volunteers are checking the penguins' safety every morning before rock work commences. The volunteers survey the upper rocks and landings for any sight of penguins.

I was really impressed by how many penguins they found and even more amazed how the volunteers manoeuvred among the rocks and helped the penguins move to safer grounds.

Each penguin was scanned and recorded and another penguin was found without a microchip. That made three new penguins found this morning, lifting the recorded population from 1300 to 1303 .

The penguins seem to be pairing up in ready for the breeding season that starts from July.

Nikki is completing her PhD at university, and her thesis is on the penguins. She is doing an absolutely brilliant job inspecting the breakwater every morning at 6am, six days a week.

Earthcare Volunteers are very dedicated to the cause. I felt very privileged to join them this morning and being given the opportunity to release a penguin into the water.

I now have a better appreciation of how great the StKilda Harbour is.

Bellingham arrives at RMYS - Floating marina construction starts .

Jan Fielding, Tuesday, 7 May 2013

On Tuesday 7 May, Kevin Johnson and his barge arrived at RMYS to start piling works for the Bellingham floating marina at Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron. It's exciting, it's taking shape and our boats will be in just after Christmas.

Click on the Header for more information.

I am absolutely delighted  (and very excited)  to advise members that the construction of the actual marina component of the RMYS harbour project commenced today, Tuesday 7 May 2013.

Kevin Johnson and his barge arrived to start the piling works for the Bellingham floating marina. Piling work will start with the northern attenuator before moving south for the installation of piles for the marina pontoons, commencing with rows A and B. The schedule, depending on weather, sees piling for the marina pontoons progress to Row F by the end of May.

A  big “Thank You" to Michael Neumann, Peter Roberts (Holdfast Marine) and David Connolly (Committee Member), who have spent hours on the planning and relocation of the swing moorings to allow for the start of  the marina construction. I’m told that the relocation of Largo took a full day.

This is a truly historic occasion for Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron. I remain a firm believer in “Fat Ladies Singing" but we are on target to complete marina construction by early 2014.  For those of you fortunate enough to have secured a pen in the new marina, there is a lot to look forward to. I’m planning a  “pen-warming" party, stern in to the floating finger so I can “step-on" in my party dress.

The marina precinct will be a true construction site for the next six months replete with barges, rocks, moxy trucks and pile-driving equipment. The relocation of the swing moorings will be a work-in-progress, barges working six days a week, moxy trucks travelling south across the existing breakwater, piles driven north and south. We will endeavour to keep the members advised of the progress of the construction, particularly around the Parks Victoria timber pier section replacement.

There will be the need at times for patience, but the results for the Squadron will be sensational.

There are a limited number of long-term pens available. All enquiries should be directed to General Manager Rod Austin.

Any questions in respect to the marina project, please contact myself, Project Director Stuart Tait or Rod Austin at RMYS.

Commodore
