RMYS Training Academy TACKERS Junior sailing program
 Royal Melbourne Sail Training Academy at RMYS has been approved as a new TACKERS Centre and will begin delivering TACKERS Junior sailing courses at St.Kilda.
TACKERS is Yachting Australia’s new introductory sailing course for children 7 to 12 years old with a focus on safety, fun and participation. Aimed at competing with other high profile junior sports, Yachting Victoria and OZi Opti developed a new entry level sailing program aimed at increasing the participation of children in sailing. Based on the success of TACKERS in Victoria the program is now about to go national with Yachting Australia.
Using the Opti TACKER dinghy (a plastic 2 child training version of the one design OPTIMIST dinghy) the TACKERS program leads junior sailor through three levels of training before encouraging participation in junior racing. Fun activities and games are part of the TACKERS training curriculum.
Sail training manager Leigh Brennan-Smith said today:
“As a Yachting Australia Training Centre we have used the Opti dinghy for junior sail training courses for the last 2 years with great success. In that time the TACKERS program has matured, from being taught in a few clubs around Melbourne to where it is now to be adopted nationally by Yachting Australia. It was time for us to get onboard and we’ve just purchased six additional Opti’s in order to deliver sailing classes for local primary schools (up to 24 kids in 12 boats) and higher level TACKERS programs. The promotion of the TACKERS brand to Australian families will be the key to the program’s success and allowing more kids to have a fun, healthy onwater experience through TACKERS will boost the profile of sailing as a sport in Australia”
TACKERS will be the main junior sailing program offered by the Royal Melbourne Sail Training Academy for 7 to 12 year olds. The Academy will continue to offer youth sailing courses in X3 Extreme, Heron and Pacer dinghies, along with adult learn to sail dinghy and keelboat courses. Little TACKERS for children aged 4 to 6 will be also offered as the sailing season progresses.
In Term 4 TACKERS and junior sailing courses will be offered on Sunday morning’s commencing 8 th October between 9 am to 12 noon. This is the traditional time for junior sailing at RMYS and we still welcome parents to be involved. TACKERS will also be offered on Saturdays and during the Christmas holidays.
